Understanding BMSB (Brown Marmorated Stink Bug): A Major Threat to Agricultural Exports

The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) is an invasive agricultural pest that has raised serious concern in many countries due to its ability to damage a wide range of crops. It often hides inside goods and shipping containers—especially during colder months—prompting destination countries such as Australia and New Zealand to implement strict control measures to prevent infestation.

Characteristics of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB)

     • Small, shield-shaped insect

     • Typically 8–12 mm in length, with some growing up to 20 mm

     • All three pairs of legs are covered with small spines

     • Body color ranges from dark brown to nearly black

     • Emits a strong, foul odor from a gland on its back—hence the name “stink bug”

BMSB Season

Australia and New Zealand are among the countries with the strictest import requirements related to BMSB. The high-risk period—known as the BMSB Season—runs from 1 September to 30 April each year.

During this time, many goods exported from designated risk countries (including Thailand) must be treated through fumigation or heat treatment in accordance with import regulations.

If any sign of BMSB is detected in a shipment, even a single insect, the goods may be subject to quarantine, re-inspection, or special handling procedures—leading to increased shipping times, costs, and potential reputational risks.

What Types of Goods Are Classified as Target Risk Goods?

     • Machinery, vehicle parts, and automobiles

     • Construction materials

     • Goods packed with wooden pallets

     • Shipping containers (both FCL and LCL)

     • Products from countries on the risk list: e.g., China, South Korea, India, Japan, Thailand, etc.

What Exporters Should Do

If your products fall into the risk category during BMSB Season, you should take one of the following actions:

  1. Fumigation – Using approved gases such as Methyl Bromide or Sulfuryl Fluoride
  2. Heat Treatment – According to the required temperature and duration standards
  3. Use Certified Providers – Ensure your fumigation provider is accredited under AFAS (Australian Fumigation Accreditation Scheme)
